  • Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition is an excuse to issue a press release

We really feel for the folks at Saab, and not just because we love the 9-5 SportCombi and that we pined for a Turbo 900 with the Aero package for what seemed like all of the '80s. Yet look ahead 20 years – specifically to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show – and all we have to get excited about is the Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition. Frankly, the press release is more exciting.
The grille is spruced up with matte chrome. Besides the fact that it looks like plastic, doesn't a matte finish defeat the purpose of chrome? Inside, as always with Saab, the two-tone seats are terrific places to plop one's rear, and the things covered in leather have the look and feel you want in your quirky luxury sedan. Elsewhere... well, it's the same thing Saab owners have been looking at for years, but with some of the plastic in different places. It isn't bad. It's "Why?"

    Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition

It comes with almost everything; the only options being metallic paint, ventilated seats and navigation. But when this is everything, and everything in sedan form costs $42,775, who's looking for this?
Premiere at North American International Auto Show
DETROIT – In the luxurious 9-5 Griffin Edition, making its premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January, Saab offers levels of premium standard equipment that are unprecedented in the 62-year history of the Swedish car brand.
As underlined by its U.S. advertising tagline, "Born From Jets," Saab's illustrious aircraft heritage is part of its design philosophy that runs throughout its range of automobiles. With the vigor of its turbocharged engine and agile road manners, the Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition resonates with its aircraft namesake, the Gripen (Swedish for Griffin) – the first of the new generation of multi-role combat aircraft to enter into active service, developed by Saab Aircraft AB in Sweden.
"With the 9-5 Griffin Edition, Saab reaches a new altitude in terms of premium standard equipment and value," said Steve Shannon, executive director, marketing and product, Saab Automobile USA.
Available in four-door Sedan as well as five-door SportCombi models, all versions feature Saab's signature 2.3L, 260-horsepower (194 kW) four-cylinder engine and can be matched to five-speed manual or automatic transmissions without extra charge.
The exterior of the 9-5 Griffin shows influences from the recently updated Saab 9-3 family, such as the use of matte chrome for the front grill, as well as the frames around the Xenon headlamps. The Sedan has a rear spoiler on the trunk lid, while the SportCombi can be recognized by its roof spoiler and roof rails in matte chrome finish.
Unique five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels, plus Griffin badges on the front fenders adorn both body styles. In addition to Polar White, this special edition Saab 9-5 is available in six metallic colors, including Jet Black, Snow Silver, Nocturne Blue, Pepper Green, plus the new Carbon Grey and Glass Grey.
On the inside, every 9-5 Griffin shines with high-gloss interior trim, floor mats with grey piping, as well as the use of accent color stitching on the steering wheel, shift lever and handbrake. This premium stitching also applies to the Aero-inspired leather-appointed sport seats. They are available in two two-tone variations: black with parchment inserts and parchment with black inserts. Additional standard equipment includes a rear parking assist system, plus heated outside mirrors that are not only power-adjustable and foldable, but also auto-dimming.
Expected to start arriving in Saab dealer showrooms in January 2009, the 9-5 Griffin will be priced starting at U.S. $42,775 for the Sedan and $ 44,045 for the versatile and stylish SportCombi (prices include destination charges). In addition to the rich standard equipment, including an automatic transmission, the only options for the 9-5 Griffin are metallic paint, ventilated seats and a navigation system.
Saab is a division of General Motors Corp. Saab Automobile USA is the importer and/or distributor of the Saab 9-3, 9-5 and 9-7X for Saab Automobile AB, Sweden. For the 2009 model year, Saab offers 7 different models that deliver 27 mpg or better according to EPA Highway fuel economy standards. In addition to 4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper warranty, including roadside assistance and courtesy transportation, every new Saab comes with 3 years/36,000 miles no-charge scheduled maintenance plus standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio. • Volvo FH16, Worlds Most Powerful Truck, Unveiled In Europop Music Video

With 700 HP and 2323 Lb-Ft of torque, the new Volvo FH16 is the most powerful semi-truck in the world. Unfortunately, that message is lost in the Eurotrash technopop music video reveal.

When we downloaded this video from Volvo Trucks, we were expecting some seething electric guitar, heavy drums and prominently featured heavy equipment. Well they came through with the heavy equipment, but the rest is hilariously absent. Regardless of the interesting anthem choice, you can't argue with the figures — 16 liter, 6-cylinder turbocharged and intercooled diesel, 700 HP, 2323 Lb-Ft of torque, 62,000 miles between oil changes. That is crazy. Sure you can get it with lesser powerplants, but what the heck is the point of that. Then you couldn't say "I own the worlds most powerful commercially built truck."

    The press release follows:

Premiere for the most powerful truck in the world

January 7 is a historic day for all truck enthusiasts. Today is the day Volvo Trucks is launching the world’s most powerful series-manufactured truck. The Volvo FH16 with 700 hp and 3150 Nm of torque.

Volvo Trucks is the first manufacturer in the world to be able to put a 700 hp badge on its vehicles. The truck model in question is the company’s flagship, the Volvo FH16, which to date has had a maximum power output of 660 hp.

    Prestigious powerplant
“The Volvo FH16 is intended for the very heaviest and most demanding of transport operations. It is also a highly prestigious truck for the customer who is looking for something truly out of the ordinary. And with 700 hp, the Volvo FH16 sets itself apart from everything else in the industry,” says Staffan Jufors, President and CEO of Volvo Trucks.

    Competitive fuel consumption
With higher power, one might well expect that fuel consumption would head in the same direction, but that is not the case.
“Our aim is to have both the best performance and the best fuel economy in the segment. We have succeeded in keeping fuel consumption the same as before despite the power increase. In a comparison with the competition, we are doing very well indeed,” reveals Staffan Jufors.

    Lower environmental impact
The Volvo FH16 is certified for the new Euro 5 European emission requirements that come into force in autumn 2009, which means that emissions of nitrogen oxide have been cut by more than 40 percent. In other words, the Volvo FH16 has become even more powerful but without compromising on the environment. In addition to the 700 hp version the Volvo FH16 is also available in variants producing 540 and 600 hp respectively.

It was already powerful, now it is the most powerful in the world. Enter the Volvo D16G – the beating heart of the Volvo FH16.

With 700 horsepower and 3150 Nm of torque, Volvo’s most recent 16-litre engine sets a new benchmark for the truck industry. This is the first time ever that a commercially produced truck is being launched with such a powerful engine, designed for the very heaviest and most demanding of haulage assignments. The Volvo D16G is also available with 600 and 540 hp.

40 extra horsepower, 40 percent lower emissions
The new engine is a further development of Volvo’s previous D16 engine that produced 660 hp. In addition to an extra 40 horsepower and somewhat higher torque, the new engine produces cleaner exhaust gases. Emissions of nitrogen oxide are 40 percent lower than in the previous engine. The new 16-litre engine is certified for the new Euro 5 European emission requirements that come into force on October 1, 2009.

Optimised combustion promotes higher efficiency rating
Despite the higher power, fuel consumption remains the same as in the previous engine generation. Through a number of measures including redesigned pistons, Volvo’s engineers have optimised the combustion process and met demands for high performance combined with efficient fuel utilisation, low emissions and long lifetime. Both maximum power and maximum torque span a wider rev range than before, contributing to excellent driveability. The engine now also features a new oil thermostat that has a favourable effect on fuel consumption.

    Quieter idling
The noise level during idling has been lowered by 2dB(A). With the help of pre-injection, where a small amount of fuel is sprayed into the cylinder, the result is a gentler combustion sequence and a far lower noise level.

    Effective exhaust cleaning
Another important change in the two most powerful engine variants is a new and larger system for exhaust after-treatment. Since the system can handle a larger flow of exhaust gases, counter-pressure is reduced and power losses are minimised. A larger-capacity system also results in better cleaning capacity. Just as before, the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system is used, taking effective care of harmful emissions.

    EPG or VEB+
The Volvo D16G is equipped as standard with a new, electronically controlled exhaust brake (EPG) with an output of 230 kW. Electronic control makes it possible to reduce the number of moving parts, promoting simpler operation, higher reliability and lower weight. There is also the option of the Volvo Engine Brake, VEB+, with 425 kW braking effect.

    Facts, Volvo D16G Euro 5

  • Volvo Announces Powerful Twin-Turbo Diesel For Euro S80

Once again, the American market gets shafted on badass diesels, Volvo has announced a new engine for its European S80, a 2.4 liter twin-turbo diesel with 205 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque.

The all-new D5 diesel boasts better power, better fuel economy and hits Euro 5 emissions standards. The new inline five engine gets all-aluminum construction, a set of unequal sized sequential turbochargers that deliver a constant 26 PSI of boost, ceramic glow-plugs and high pressure piezoelectric fuel injectors to name a few features. All of that engineering goodness combines to deliver peak power at 4000 RPM and peak torque in a fat rev range between 1500 and 3250 RPM.

So just what kind of fuel economy is Volvo expecting when this new D5 gets installed in its full size S80 sedan? How does 38 miles per gallon highway strike you?

VOLVO'S NEW EURO 5 D5 DIESEL ENGINE OFFERS INCREASED PERFORMANCE AND LOWER
    FUEL CONSUMPTION

Volvo Cars is introducing a new 2.4-litre 5-cylinder diesel engine in the Volvo S80. Sharing only the D5 badge and the five-cylinder configuration with the previous generation, the new engine is now Euro 5 compliant and is significantly more efficient than its predecessor. The new D5 engine will be available in the UK from mid-2009 and pricing and specifications will be announced nearer the time.

With innovative engineering solutions such as sequential twin turbochargers, ceramic glow-plugs and piezoelectric fuel injectors, Volvo's engineers have succeeded in cutting fuel consumption to some of the lowest levels for a car of this size – 45.6mpg, while CO2 emissions are only 164g/km. These low levels of fuel consumption, in combination with improved power output of 205hp and 420Nm of torque, mean the Volvo S80 with D5 engine is bidding for the best in class title.

"Our brief was to develop a modern performance diesel engine that meets the Euro 5 standard," says Derek Crabb, Vice President, Powertrain Engineering. "The previous engine has undergone constant development but has now reached the end of its potential. We therefore decided to start with a clean sheet of paper and harness the advanced technology which we have access to today. The result is even better than we dared hope. What is more, this engine has been developed entirely in-house at Volvo."

Performance and driving comfort of top class
Volvo's new D5 engine has a displacement of 2.4 litres, offering power and response as soon as the accelerator is depressed. The performance and driveability enhancements have been made with the use of twin different-sized turbochargers that operate in sequence to provide added power within a broader rev range. The result is an immediate response and rapid acceleration at all speeds, with smooth power delivery between the two turbo ranges.

At lower rev ranges, the smaller turbocharger ensures rapid acceleration without any perceptible lag, while at higher ranges, the larger turbocharger delivers the high levels of power torque not available with a single unit. This power means there are always ample resources for quick overtaking, particularly between 50 and 75 mph.

This twin-turbo technology has also made it possible to introduce higher levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) across a wider rev range than before. This harnesses the two turbochargers' different properties optimally to deliver high performance and low fuel consumption.

Advanced injection technology using piezoelectric fuel injectors provides precise distribution of the atomised fuel in the combustion chamber, resulting in efficient combustion and low emissions. At the same time, this technology and the efficient combustion deliver a refined engine note, bearing a closer resemblance to the noise of a six-cylinder petrol engine. The engine offers excellent results in terms of noise comfort and noise perception, technically known as NVH or Noise, Vibration and Harshness.

The injection system with its piezoelectric fuel injectors and high-efficiency fuel pump also help cut fuel consumption through extremely rapid and precise injection sequences and high injection pressure, resulting in particularly effective combustion.

    Lower fuel consumption
"When the project got under way, our goal was to bring fuel consumption down to 44.1mpg in the Volvo S80, which, after all, is a relatively large car," recalls Derek Crabb. "As the work progressed, we saw that we could beat that target and today we are actually up to 45.6mpg. With an automatic gearbox we have been able to reduce the consumption by more than 8 percent, from 38.7 to 42.2mpg, which is a significant improvement."

    Low emissions and easy breathing
"The technical solutions that contribute to this low fuel consumption also help reduce the engine's environmental footprint," explains Derek Crabb. "Reducing emissions and particulates was one of the basic requirements when the new engine was being developed."

In addition to twin turbochargers, piezoelectric fuel injectors and improved EGR control, the new D5 engine has been equipped with ceramic glow-plugs, an innovative solution that delivers excellent cold-starting properties thanks to a very quick warm up period. They reach a temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius in just two seconds, making the engine easy to start and thus cutting emissions. In certain driving conditions, such as at very low revs, the heat generated by the ceramic glow-plugs can also be used to increase the temperature in the cylinders, further improving combustion efficiency.

The advanced injection technology makes it possible to supply additional fuel in tiny increments after the main injection charge, a process known as post-injection, with the aim of removing any soot particulates in the exhaust gases.

In order to ensure low particulate emissions, the engine has to be able to breathe easily and efficiently. And here Volvo's engineers have succeeded again thanks to optimised control of air delivery to the cylinders.

Three years from project start to delivery
The new five-cylinder diesel is the first engine from Volvo's new project office for diesel engine development.

"The entire process from receiving the brief to installing the first engine in a car has taken less than three years," says Derek Crabb. "The aim was to develop a diesel engine with performance and driving comfort that satisfied the high demands of customers in the S80 segment. It also had to be tailored to meet forthcoming strict environmental requirements," he added.

The engine was developed on a modular basis in terms of both design and building method, using standardised mountings for the turbochargers and other components. This makes it easier to install in other Volvo models and gives more scope for further development to meet future demands.

    The technology in brief

    * The D5 engine is made entirely out of aluminium, giving low weight and good heat dissipation properties.

    * Transverse cooling gives uniform cooling of the cylinder head and engine block. This promotes a controlled temperature throughout the engine and contributes to high reliability and long lifetime.

    * The two turbochargers are of different sizes and together deliver high boost pressure, 1.8 bar, across a particularly broad rev range. The smaller turbocharger is used primarily at lower revs. It reacts more quickly than the larger one and provides immediate response to quick throttle movements. At higher revs, the larger turbocharger takes over to provide more performance when accelerating at higher speeds. In addition to increased performance and reduced fuel consumption, the twin-turbo approach makes it possible to exploit the EGR system more efficiently.

    * By increasing the volume of the EGR cooler and equipping it with effective cooling fins, it has been possible to increase heat dissipation efficiency by no less than 25 percent. This in turn cools the returning exhaust gases to a far lower temperature, thus reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX) to a level that easily matches the Euro 5 requirements.

    * The piezoelectric fuel injectors are used in combination with an efficient high-pressure fuel pump to achieve a high injection pressure of 1800 bar. This type of injector has a nozzle with a response time twice as fast as that of a conventional injector nozzle. As a result, the amount of fuel injected can be tailored precisely to suit any operating condition which, in turn, delivers effective combustion, lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions of harmful substances. Owing to its speed, a piezoelectric injector nozzle can deliver up to seven separate injections during each operating cycle. Thanks to this speed and the high fuel delivery pressure, the injector nozzle can provide short pre-delivery injections even when engine revs exceed 3000 rpm, ensuring a refined engine note. The piezoelectric injector nozzle can also produce extremely short post-delivery injections of fuel after the main injection sequence.

    * The D5 engine features common-rail injection via a stainless steel fuel rail that is specially designed to withstand the high pressures. Injection pressure can be as high as 1800 bar.

    * The fuel pump is a high-pressure unit with two pump elements instead of three as in the previous D5 engine generation. This makes the pump spin more easily, thus reducing the load on the various components. It also reduces fuel consumption.

    * Ceramic glow-plugs are components that offer excellent starting properties. They are heated up almost instantaneously and reach 1000 degrees Celsius just two seconds after a cold start. Maximum operating temperature is 1300 degrees, which is about 30 percent higher than that of a conventional glow-plug. With ceramic glow-plugs, the engine can be started immediately without pre-heating, even at temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.

    * Instead of using an oil dipstick the driver is alerted via the information display if the oil needs replenishing. The system even specifies how much oil is needed.

    * Finally, the engine mountings have been further developed and tailored to suit the high torque levels. They are supplemented with a third torque rod to stabilise the engine during firm acceleration.

However, no details on its cornering ability were forthcoming.

Could one say an eight-wheel car is twice the car any normal one is? A team of Japanese engineers seems to think so. Dr.

Hiroshi Shimizu and his team have built this monster of a four-door called Eliica which runs on lithium-ion batteries.

Shimizu-san initially developed the car in 2003. Two examples of the four-seater Eliica currently exist as the team attempts to get sponsorship to build more.

That may happen as the Japanese government's interest in electric vehicles grows. If and when that happens, 200 units will be made for a price of around USD $255,000.

  • Obama’s Limo - A Hard Nut to Crack

Now that President Barack Obama was officially sworn into office as the 44th President of the United States, today in Washington, it’s time for us to take a look at Barack Obama’s new limo. A week ago, GM came out with the official details of the new Cadillac presidential limousine, and we’re really impressed. With a completely new design from its predecessor, it has a dual-textured grille from the Escalade, side and rear profiles from the DTS and STS, while the inside resembles the interior of a CTS. And though the design is impressive, we’d really love to know a bit about the high tech safety features it comes packed with. Cadillac only said that “the car was designed, developed and tested by specialists who adhered to an extensive set of specifications. It was subjected to an extreme testing regimen to ensure performance that achieves precise functional requirements.” [via SFGate]

  • Mini One Clubman - Entry-level, Affordable and Fuel Efficient

This years Motor Show in Geneva is not far (starts March 28) and we already heard there are a lot of surprises for us. One comes from Mini, which we’ve been told, will be unveiling their entry-level, affordable and fuel efficient Mini One Clubman. With the exquisite Clubman interior, the stylish vehicle uses a 1.4-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 95hp, goes from naught to 100km/h in 11.6 seconds and has a fuel efficiency of 52.3 mpg. The eco factor comes from the fact that it’s using the brake regeneration technology, auto start/stop and a shift point display that tells the driver when to shift to maximize fuel economy. From what we’ve heard - can’t confirm it yet, the price in the UK will be starting at £13,290 so better expect it to be a bit more expensive in SA.

  • Hybridmania - The Future of Hybrid Cars

Speculations are on about the future of hybrid cars. With relatively new technology, some believe that hybrid cars are fast turning into the cars of future. The vehicle is much appreciated due to its duel power and environmental friendly properties. The energy source which is used in the hybrid cars are renewable and hence the pose much less danger to our atmosphere. They emerged as money and energy saver vehicles.
Consumers are ready to take chance with the advance technology which hybrid cars have on offer. Today, Honda and Toyota are the two prominent companies producing hybrid cars. While Honda launched its Honda Civic Hybrid, Toyota is ready with its Prius. These two cars will certainly not fit into the budget of a common man yet there are people who are taking the pleasure to drive them. The combination of gasoline and electric motor, the vehicle is doing pretty well in the car market. Toyota is planning to have a hybrid version of each of their models available by the year 2010. With brands such as Nissan, Mazda, Ford, Fiat, Peugeot, Audi and even Porsche, all these vehicles are licensed to use Toyota's Hybrid technology in future. Now it's only a wait and watch situation if Toyota are onto a winning formula or not.
Millions of people are interested in buying the hybrid car but not all get the chance to buy it because they are very expensive. In spite of this much hyped show, hybrid cars are somehow falling flat on consumer market. Latest survey shows a different result from what had been expected. Hybrid cars lack in mileage which is a great set back for all the hybrid car owners. Currently a hybrid car gets up to a mileage of 31 mpg on city and 45 mpg on highway. Unless manufacturers seriously look into this aspect, the car may fail to sustain the on-going hybrid mania for long. With the situation like this, the future of hybrid technology is yet to be decided. But these hybrid cars are boon for our environment, fuel conservation and a certain way to fight global warming.

  • Volvo to webcast Detroit Auto Show press conference live

VolvoIt may not be the same as attending the event in-person, but a live, interactive webcast of Volvo's press conference at the Detroit Auto Show, where the S60 concept and production XC60 for North America will be shown, could be the next best thing. The broadcast is intended for media types and members of the press, but the fact that it's being aired on DirecTV (channel 101, January 11 at 5:30 - 6:30 PM ET) means that anybody with a television and the satellite service can watch it live. Alternatively, users can register for a password to the online site, the location of which is not yet determined.
The coolest bit of tech that's making an appearance for this event is the capability to send questions to a live host who will then relay selected inquiries to key Volvo executives. These days, the global economic downturn is affecting everyone, including those who would normally cover these events for the media. This being the case and assuming the event is a success, we'd expect to more manufacturers to adopt a similar system at upcoming auto shows. Of course, we'll be there live and you can always direct your browsers to our pages for the best coverage available.

The press release we received says the radios will be offered as "built-in original equipment" but doesn't go into detail about what automakers will offer the system or even how the radios receive the data.
"The beauty of Internet car radio is the customized user experience," said George Parthimos, Founder and CEO of miRoamer said in a press release. • Brand new 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT on sale, just $35k!

    1988 Pontiac Fiero GT

So you're a Pontiac diehard, but you don't need the space of the G8 GT GXP and the Solstice GXP is just a bit too "me too." So what's a Big Chief enthusiast to do? Well, if you've got $35,000 kicking around in your automotive slush fund, how about a brand-new, never-titled 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT? The mid-engined, V6 Fiero that General Motors should have been building the whole time, but only got around to developing just before they sent they took the plastic-bodied model out back? Yes, that GT.
Evidently thinking ahead, some enterprising chap found a fire-engine red example and promptly mothballed it. Quite likely the only "brand new" Fiero on the planet (GT or otherwise), this time warp rear-driver has just 221 miles on it, and is still on MSO. Heck, we're willing to bet that the cassette player has never even seen a copy of White Snake's Greatest Hits!
If you're interested, the optimistically-priced but irreplacable Fiero can be found at Hinton Chevrolet-Buick in Lynden, Washington. Thanks for the tip, Farris!

On the rare occasion that an Aston Martin passes into view, it's impossible not to look. Its exquisite sheet metal has a way of making the world a better place, which is why the picture above is so damn painful. We don't have many details regarding exactly how this gorgeous Aston Martin V8 Vantage ended up at a 45-degree angle, but we're pretty sure that's going to show up on CarFax. A quick look at the blacktop beneath the $120,000 supercar reveals that a piece of the truck's loading equipment simply snapped off, resulting in... well...
Considering that the owner loved this Vantage enough to have it shipped via a covered carrier (and likely waited months for the right to buy it) you get an idea of just how upset he or she is right about now. Actually, looking at the photo, we can see that the gentlemen responsible for unloading the Aston don't look too pleased either.

Apparently the French chewed on it and decided that it’s time to get the artillery out. Prepared for this year’s Geneva auto show in March, the enhanced version of the Megane gets its inspiration from Megane trophy race car and will be using a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (the same from R26 model) mated to a six speed manual transmission. Expected to output nothing less than 250 hp, the Renaultsport Megane should go naught to 100km/h in just 6 seconds. My bet is that it will really take on the VW Scirocco, what do you think? Based on the quirky iQ minicar currently sold in Japan—and going on sale in Europe this month—the concept does away with the car’s pint-sized gasoline or diesel engine in favor of a compact battery-fed electric drivetrain that the company says allows it to cover up to 50 miles between recharges.

  • Majority of Chrysler to come out of bankruptcy by end of May

Judge Arthur Gonzalez may approve the sale of Chrysler as early as next Wednesday’s hearing. According to a report by Automotive News, Chrysler’s main business may be approved for sale to Fiat SpA by the end of May - in line with the government’s target of getting the Auburn Hills automaker out of bankruptcy within 30 to 60 days.

While there are a couple of hurdles that still remain, Gonzalez has been a key part in getting objections from employees, part suppliers and others cleared up.

Most of Chrysler’s assets will be formed into a new company that will be sold to Fiat, the unions, and the Canadian and U.S. governments. Some of the company’s plants will remain in bankruptcy to settle other claims.

Last week, Chrysler announced that C. Robert Kidder will become Chairman of Chrysler, replacing Bob Nardelli. It is reported that the new company will be called Chrysler Group LLC, of which Sergio Marchionne, head of Fiat, will become CEO.
