Spy Shots: 2010 Lincoln MKT caught in the cold
Just a year after the MKT Concept debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Lincoln will be unveiling the production version of its new three-row CUV next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Fortunately, our spy photographers have snapped the most revealing views yet of this new 2010 LincolnMKT being driven out on the snowy streets of Dearborn. As you can see, the production MKT holds true to the design direction set by the concept with the largest version yet of Lincoln's signature split-wing grille and that conspicuous kink at the base of the C-pillar. In profile, the MKT seems to share a roofline with the Audi Q7 that creates a soft arch from front to back, and the rear gate is also tilted far forward to avoid the upright, boxy look of a traditional SUV or CUV.
Though the MKT is based on the same platform and shares many components with the Ford Flex, you could never tell by looking at it. There's no badge engineering going on here, and one could argue whereas the Flex design focuses on slab sides and accentuates the horizontal, the MKT is soft and organic with a focus on being sinewy rather than blocky.
Our spy photographers also snapped the dash, which continues a trend at Lincoln of upgrading the materials and incorporating the latest technology. That's real wood stretching across the instrument panel, and you'd be hard pressed to find a larger navigation screen in any other production vehicle (other than another Ford or Lincoln).
Finally, we also noticed that this particular prototype is wearing all of its badging, including an EcoBoost badge that confirms at least one engine choice will be an EcoBoost V6 that features turbocharging and direct injection. Keep your eyes on Autoblog in early January for our coverage of the 2009 Detroit Auto Show where we'll finally see Lincoln's future in person.

Detroit Auto Show 2009 Preview: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox debuts with direct injection
Now that General Motors will be getting a cash infusion to stay in business at least through January, the automaker plans to unveil some new products at next month's Detroit Auto Show. The first one we can show you is the second-generation 2010 Chevy Equinox. You might recognize the greenhouse from spy photos we published earlier this year in which which the CUV was misidentified as the Cadillac BRX. While the Equinox gets a complete re-skin for 2010, the new CUV's dimensions are within an inch of the current model in all directions.
The Equinox remains a unibody crossover with either front- or all-wheel drive and the same basic suspension layout as before. The platform is an evolution of the current Theta architecture shared with the Saturn Vue. The Equinox's new styling looks more contemporary with prominent wheel arches and the obligatory Chevy twin-port grille. Inside, a new dual cockpit setup looks very similar to the one in the larger Traverse. As expected of any new model these days, the full array of USB audio, Bluetooth and DVD entertainment systems are also now available. Read about the new engines powering the Equinox after the jump.
The center console bin in the new 2010 Equinox is exceptionally deep, being able to swallow a 15-inch laptop with ease. While the new cockpit layout is attractive with fewer visible seams than the larger Traverse, the pre-production model was saw in person had cheap-looking hard plastics covering the dash. Chevrolet officials promised that production models coming in May would look much better, although hard plastic will apparently still be the order of the day.
A more robust body structure along with a number of other enhancements should make the cabin a quieter place. Triple-sealed doors, laminated acoustical glass and a drag coefficient reduced from 0.42 to 0.36 should make wind noise significantly lower than before. The doors now extend down into the rocker panels (just like the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS) making step-in easier. The kids in back can also slide their seat fore and aft up to eight inches and recline their seatbacks, as well. An optional DVD entertainment system incorporates two screens that flip up from the seatbacks. In addition, these can be individually controlled so one kid can watch DVDs and the other can play video games.
The current Equinox had an all V6 engine lineup including a pushrod 3.4L that traces its lineage back to the original 1980 Chevy Citation. Existing Equinox Sport models use the 3.6L twin-cam "high-feature" V6 that appears in so many GM products today. Both of these engines have been replaced with new engines that have similar power but are considerably more fuel efficient.
The entry engine for the 2010 Equinox is a 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder now offered for the first time in normally aspirated and direct-injected form. With 182 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque running through a new 6-speed automatic transaxle, this model will be the fuel efficiency champ of the lineup. The front-drive four-banger should get 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. That's a huge increase over the 17/24 mpg values of the old engine. Unfortunately, while the new base engine's power output virtually matches the old 3.4L, torque is down significantly so towing capacity has dropped from 3,500 lbs to just 1,500 lbs.
Those who need the full 3,500 lbs of towing grunt will opt for the new 3.0L V6. Like the four-cylinder, this one is direct-injected to the tune of 255 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. Those figures are down a bit from the 264/250 of the old 3.6L, but again the payoff is improved fuel efficiency. Also helping efficiency on both models the four cylinder model is an electric power steering that no longer saps engine power.
No word yet from GM on whether or when either a mild or two-mode hybrid system might be stuffed in the new Equinox to improve mileage further. The new DI four and six-speed automatic combined with the second-generation lithium battery mild hybrid system might even approach the mileage of the Ford Escape hybrid, but hybrids were the one subject no one at GM wanted to officially comment on.
The Equinox shares its platform with the Saturn Vue. With the distinct possibility that Saturn could be euthanized, the two-mode hybrid system from that model would need a new home. Judging by the "no comment on future products" responses that were accompanied by smiles, it seems likely that a hybrid (either next-gen mild or two-mode) will join the Equinox lineup sooner rather than later.
PRESS RELEASE
2010 CHEVROLET EQUINOX:
A COMPACT CROSSOVER FOR ALL SEASONS – AND ALL LIFESTYLES
All-new crossover delivers expected segment-best highway fuel economy
DETROIT – Chevrolet unveiled the all-new 2010 Equinox, a compact crossover that blends distinctive design with outstanding efficiency. A new, 2.4L direct injection engine helps the Equinox deliver expected best-in-segment estimated highway fuel economy of 30 mpg (EPA certification pending) – a 25-percent improvement over the previous model. Chevrolet expects nearly two-thirds of customers will choose the efficient, 2.4L engine.
The new Equinox draws its exterior design inspiration from the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover; and like those vehicles, the new Equinox complements its styling with attention to detail and unexpected features, according to Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.
The Equinox makes its world debut at the North American Auto Show in Detroit next month.
"At a time when customers are so concerned about the fuel efficiency of their vehicle, the Equinox delivers," said Peper. "It offers the roominess and capability of a crossover with great fuel economy. Equinox will provide customers a vehicle filled with refinement, comfort and great value."
The 2010 Equinox goes on sale in mid-2009. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology. Vehicle highlights include:
New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending) New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 255 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending) Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio "Smart" remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature "With the 2010 Equinox, we focused on appealing to the senses – from the overall design to the feel of the interior," said Peper.
Design details
The design features Chevy's signature global face – the two-tier grille and prominent gold Bowtie insignia. Strong fender shapes, a distinctive premium roofline, wraparound headlamps and dual round taillamps are additional elements that define Equinox as a true Chevrolet, Peper said.
"The new Equinox blends function and style into a very sporty, yet upscale compact crossover," said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. "Both the exterior and interior surprise and delight with careful attention to detail."
Additional design features include:
A multi-dimensional hood and wraparound rear side glass and a wheels-at-the-corners stance Improved aerodynamic performance through a number of carefully designed exterior features, including moving the base of the windshield forward approximately three inches (75 mm) for a sleeker profile Equinox's rocker panels are integrated into the doors to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. They narrow the area over which a passenger must step, offering protection for pant legs that could brush against dirty rockers. Also, the select use of chrome trim and flush-fitting "exposed-edge" windshield and rear glass reinforce Equinox's build quality and reduce wind noise.
Dimensionally, the Equinox rides on the same 112.5-inch wheelbase (2,857 mm), but is about one inch (25 mm) shorter in length and an inch wider. It also has a wider front track that enhances the ride and handling.
Interior amenities, storage and flexibility
Inside, the Equinox features attention to detail – including a number of storage bins, such as an oversized glove box; a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack; and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.
A "floating" center stack houses a multitude of ergonomic comfort and convenience controls. Contemporary, ice-blue ambient lighting – featured within and surrounding the center stack, encircling the center-console cupholders and within the door pull cups – accentuates the cabin. The front and rear seats, which include cloth and uplevel, perforated leather-trimmed offerings, were developed to help deliver best-in-class comfort.
The new Equinox retains its MultiFlex rear seat capability, which allows the seat to be moved fore or aft nearly eight inches (203 mm), for the best rear legroom in its class. With the 60/40-split-back rear seat moved all the way forward, the cargo area offers 31.4 cubic feet (889 liters) of storage.
The Equinox's cabin is notable for its quietness. Noise-absorbing elements are built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior.
Convenience, infotainment and connectivity
A variety of technologies are integrated in the Equinox, such as an available seven-inch touch-screen navigation system. Additional features also include:
Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity USB audio connectivity DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system with two independent screens to enable DVD viewing on one and gaming on the other Internal memory/hard drive on uplevel radios for storing audio selections Power, programmable rear liftgate Rear-vision camera system, with display in the rearview mirror or in the navigation screen Range of premium-feature audio systems with up to eight speakers and 250 watts of output Chassis and suspension
The 2010 Equinox is built on a body-integral structure with single-piece body side stampings and targeted applications of high-strength steel. Those elements form the foundation of a solid, quiet driving experience, according to Peper. The strong structure enabled engineers to tune the four-wheel-independent suspension system for greater control and driver feedback.
Standard and available features include:
Available all wheel drive Family of 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels Fuel-saving electric power steering system The rack-mounted electric power steering system provides greater fuel efficiency of on 2.4L-equipped models that saves nearly 11 miles per tank of gas, or about 572 miles per year (assuming one fill-up per week). With the Equinox's estimated 30 mpg on the highway, the electric power steering system saves the equivalent of approximately one tank of gas each year.
"With the outstanding interior execution and comfort, the stunning exterior design, numerous chassis improvements, and the connectivity to the outside world, the new Equinox is the favorite ride among our engineers," said Tim Herrick, chief engineer. "I have to pull the keys out of their hands in order to take it for a spin myself."

Detroit Auto Show 2009 Preview:SLR Stirling Moss won't be offered in North America
With the exhibitors' roster for the upcoming 2009 Detroit Auto Show dwindling, you'd think that any cars being unveiled there might actually, you know, be available in North America. But according to reports, you'd be wrong.
Mercedes-Benz is anticipated to unveil the million-dollar Stirling Moss edition Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, but sources indicate that the limited-production topless supercar won't even be offered in the market in which it's being unveiled. No worries for Mercedes, which will likely have sold the full run of 75 SLR speedsters being offered exclusively to current SLR owners before the show concludes. Bad news for supercar owners in the U.S,, who'll just have to blow their extra million on another Veyron, Reventon or Koenigsegg instead.
Now, for your viewing enjoyment, we invite you to follow the jump for video footage of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, the longest-named open-air sportscar since the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 Spyder.

2009 Detroit Auto Show Preview: Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S
When one thinks of the Indianapolis 500, Maserati is not a name that pops immediately to mind. However, cars wearing the famous trident logo won the 500 twice in 1939 and 1940 when legendary Wibur Shaw drove an 8C TF to victory at the "Brickyard" both years. Thankfully, even with all the bad news about automakers pulling out of the Detroit Auto Show this year, Maserati is using the occasion to celebrate the 70th anniversary of that first Indy victory with yet another variant of the Quattroporte.
The new Maserati Sport GT S has a recalibrated 4.7L V8 from the S now putting out 433 hp along with revised shift points for its transmission. This ultimate Quattroporte also gets a revised song thanks to a new exhaust system. The spring rates are stiffer and the dampers are now single rate rather than variable as on other QPs. Inside the GT S also gets the obligatory Alcantara trim to supplement the usual acres of leather. As you can see above and in our gallery of high-res images below, it still looks like a million bucks, though we poo poo the fact its missing any visual cues that would link it directly to the Indy 500, like a giant, downforce-inducing rear wing or Pace Car graphics on the doors

Spy Shots: 2010 Bentley Arnage
They're well ahead of the game at Bentley! Engineers are already busy working on a new Arnage – and we have caught a test mule for the flagship model driving through the firm's home town of Crewe, Cheshire.
Although the next-generation saloon isn't scheduled to appear on the road until 2010, top brass within the VW Group are keen for it to be a true Rolls-Royce beater, so the development programme is underway.
Our exclusive pictures prove that the new Arnage will be even bigger than the model it's set to replace. Look closely at the centre of the car, and you can clearly see the B-pillar has been widened – an indication that the wheelbase has grown.
The increased length will ensure the new range-topper provides limousine levels of space inside. And for the first time ever, bosses are considering the possibility of using a diesel in the Arnage. Bentley's parent company Audi has a rich heritage of oil-burners, so the options would include the V12 TDI fitted to the Audi R8.
The idea of a Bentley running on anything other than petrol has traditionally been regarded as taboo, but strict EU emissions laws are forcing the brand to rethink its 'no diesel' stance. And an oil-burner would sit well with its reputation for torquey engines and lazy power delivery.

2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Boasts New AMG Sport Package
E320 BLUETEC Shares Spotlight with High-Performance E63 AMG
The highly successful E-Class line of full-size sedans and wagons features an impressively broad and versatile range of models for 2008. Spanning from the thrifty, super-clean E320 BLUETEC diesel to the 507-hp E63 AMG, the E-Class offers the perfect car for an equally diverse range of consumer needs.
2008 Mercedes-Benz E300 BLUETEC and E350 CGI
The E320 BLUETEC luxury sedan delivers up to 32 miles per gallon (highway cycle), while at the other end of the product spectrum, the high-performance E63 AMG can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in an eye-popping 4.3 seconds.
New AMG Sport Package Offered
To complement its popular sport package (comprised of lowered sport suspension, 18-inch wheels, a sport rear bumper with dual chrome exhaust pipes, blue-tinted glass and white gauges), the E350 and E550 models are now available with an optional AMG Sport package that includes deeper front and rear aprons with dual exhausts, 18-inch AMG wheels and an AMG steering wheel that's complete with manual shift "paddles."
BLUETEC – A Blueprint For The World's Cleanest Diesels
Combining several technologies to minimize diesel exhaust emissions, The E320 BLUETEC starts with a purpose-built 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that includes four valves per cylinder, centrally located piezo-electric injectors, third-generation CDI direct injection, a turbocharger with variable nozzle turbine and exhaust gas recirculation.
The E320 BLUETEC incorporates four after-treatment units in the exhaust stream – an oxidizing catalytic converter, a particulate filter, a SCR catalytic converter and a "denox" storage converter that absorbs nitrogen oxides temporarily. During brief regeneration pulses of a richer fuel-air mixture, nitrogen oxides are released, reacting with other exhaust gas to form harmless nitrogen. These regeneration pulses also raise temperatures in the particulate filter, which burns off the accumulated deposits. The result – BLUETEC can make a diesel as clean as a modern gasoline engine.
BLUETEC depends on the use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (less than 15 parts per million) that became available in the U.S. in October of 2006. Sulfur is a natural element in most mineral oils that increases particulate emissions and has a corrosive effect on engine parts as well. The availability of very low-sulfur fuel enables the use of reliable particulate filters and efficient nitrogen-oxide after-treatment.
In October 2007, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a version of its E320 BLUETEC that is available through a special two year lease to a limited number of customers in California. California's stringent emissions requirements have kept new diesel automobiles models off the California market for the better part of a decade. The new E320 BLUETEC, distinguished as the "2007 World Green Car" by an international panel of journalists, changes all that.

Subaru Debuts New-Generation 2009 Subaru Forester Crossover SUV at 2008 NAIAS
- All-New Design with Improved Comfort, Space and Utility
- All-New Platform With Sport-Sedan Dynamics
- Standard Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)DETROIT, Jan. 13, 2008 -- Subaru of America, Inc. today introduced the all-new, third-generation 2009 Subaru Forester, a total re-design of the award-winning crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that has built a strong reputation as an icon of safety, dependability and versatility.
2009 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT
The 2009 Subaru Forester, which arrives in Subaru dealerships this spring, builds upon that reputation while projecting a bolder, more SUV-like design and making a major leap in safety technology, comfort, refinement and driving dynamics.
As with all Subaru models, the 2009 Subaru Forester comes equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. An all-new platform featuring a 3.6-inch longer wheelbase (now 103.0 inches) and double-wishbone rear suspension improves crash-worthiness and at the same time provides crisper handling, a quieter ride and increased interior space and cargo room. The 2009 Forester once again blends positive SUV attributes including a high seating point and interior versatility with passenger car comfort, handling and fuel efficiency.
All Forester models for 2009 feature standard side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, and the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system is standard on all models for the first time. With the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3), Subaru optimized all elements of the Forester's chassis to deliver a better balance of ride, handling response, quietness and overall traction performance than offered by competitive vehicles. A comprehensive array of elements contributes to that goal, including the new, high-strength body structure, standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, VDC and four-wheel disc ABS brakes with the Brake Assist safety system. Manual-transmission models also feature Incline Start Assist, which can momentarily prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on an incline.
Even with its bolder exterior and roomier interior, the new 2009 Forester is only about three inches longer than its predecessor, thus retaining the trim exterior packaging cited by Forester owners as one of this model's most essential features. A robust body structure, heavy-duty raised four-wheel independent suspension system and up to 8.9 inches of ground clearance help make Forester equally adept at negotiating twisty roads and absorbing ruts and bumps.
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE WITH GREATER COMFORT AND VERSATILITY
The 2009 Forester offers naturally aspirated and turbocharged/intercooled 2.5-liter Boxer engines, both revised to provide better low-end and mid-range torque for more responsive everyday performance. The 2.5-liter normally aspirated Boxer engine delivers 170 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 170 lb-ft. of peak torque @ 4,400 rpm, still among the highest ratings for a standard engine in the segment. The revised 2.5-liter turbo Boxer engine produces 224 horsepower @ 5,200 rpm and 226 lb.-ft. of peak torque @ 2,800 rpm.
New interior materials, including double-stitched fabrics and high-grade plastics, impart a feeling of higher quality. As before, Forester is offered in a wide array of models. The 2009 Forester 2.5 X is one of the best values in the crossover SUV segment. The Forester L.L.Bean Edition model offers more luxury without compromising the vehicle's sporty nature. Traditional Subaru amenities, including heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer, are available as optional features.
The 2009 Forester offers more user technology then ever, including a navigation system for the first time as well as advanced audio system upgrade options. The 2009 Forester comes pre-wired for XM(R) or SIRIUS(R) Satellite Radio. An auxiliary audio input jack enables connection of an iPod(R) or MP3 player.

The GPS doesn’t care about bridges !
A 9-foot bridge was the last stop for a bus carrying the Garfield High School girls softball team.
Even if the GPS system had settings for car, motorcycle, bus or truck,it chose a route through the Washington Park Arboretum where the 12-foot-high vehicle crashed after going under a 9-foot bridge. The bus driver said he didn't see the flashing lights warning about the bridge height.
The softball team girls and the coach had minor injuries and,of course, the brigde had just a few scratches.

Eureka! Pontiac Drag Car Sells for $226K on eBay, Owner Unaware of History
Over the weekend, we caught wind of a very unique auction for a rusty and drivetrain-less 1963 Pontiac LeMans Tempest. From a modest starting bid of $500, a book-worthy story has sprouted in Harrison, Michigan.
The seller, 123ecklin, was aware that his car appeared to have some sort of racing history, thanks to its plexiglass windows, a racetrack dashboard plaque, and a non-standard suspension. But as the auction unfolded, it was revealed that his car is almost certainly one of just six 1963 Pontiac LeMans Tempest Super Duty Coupes built (there were an equal number of wagons), making it one of the rarest and most desirable muscle cars extant.
As the story goes, this car is believed to have been driven by racer Stan Antlocer, and it was one of the fastest drag racers of its era.
The most fascinating part of the whole story is arguably perusing of the addendums to the auction listing, which chronicle the "Eureka!" moment where the seller realized he owned not just another rusty muscle car, but a valuable piece of history.
At auction close, the Tempest had cleared a whopping $226,522, and Jay Leno was rumored to be taking part in the bidding. Somebody phone Tom Cotter already.

Hang on, GM ... for Japan's Sake!
When I was at the barber, I heard the guy next to me talking.
"What will happen to GM (General Motors)?"
"What company is it planning to merge with?"
"If GM goes away, Japan will dominate the market, won't it?"
Tokyo-ites are really snappy.
All I could say was "No way!" GM is something that we can't afford to lose, or even beat at least in the US market.
This is a theory that I have believed in for ten years though some people tell me that they have heard or read about it somewhere.
Maybe I could express this kind of opinion in conversation. But I would rather not express such a low-spirited selfish opinion in writing because it would put my grace in question. Perhaps someone else has advocated the opinion before. I will apologize if this is not an original idea. But still, this is what I believe.
Anyway, I want you to read this column thinking this is something you have heard of before.GM creates loose market
Though it looks like that Toyota Motor Corp finally saw its exports to the US fall into the red, the Japanese automobile industry has always earned profits from exports to the US. GM was already there in the North American market.
The company has a history of more than 100 years, which accounts for its large legacy cost. In addition, it has implemented restructuring almost every year. Just like a smoker who boasts about "quitting for the 100th time," it is evidence of the fact that its restructuring efforts have not made any significant progress.
In the North American market, the Big Three (is this term still appropriate?) led by GM are setting prices based on their own cost structure, and their prices are slightly higher than Japanese standards.
Japanese automakers that entered the market later were able to set their prices in light of the prices set by the Big Three. Japanese manufacturers, who are adept at "getting blood from a stone" (i.e., they are very cost efficient), were able to generate huge margins. In other words, Japanese automobile manufacturers have earned profits in the North American market thanks to GM, who is the "reverse price leader."
In the Japanese market, where GM's presence is invisible, pricing competition is fierce among Japanese manufacturers. As they are all trying to get blood from the same stone, prices are set at the lowest possible level with the slimmest of margins.
Given the high local production ratio of Japanese manufacturers, the situation in the US market will not easily collapse, even if exchange rates fluctuate further. That is why I want GM to remain solid. I want GM to maintain the loose market. I am not enthusiastic enough to start an argument with a stranger at the barber, but I believe that we can't afford to let GM disappear so easily.
Partly depending on who will acquire the company, GM will possibly succeed in restructuring for the first time. When GM becomes unable to create a loose market, its existence will no longer be beneficial to Japanese automakers. And the market will enter a full-scale "kill or be killed" phase, but we aren't there yet. I want GM to reign over the US market for much longer. I do apologize for my selfish way of thinking

GM Delays Cruze, CTS Coupe, LaCrosse, and Saab Models
Due to rising development costs, the folks at GM are having to delay a number of models that were originally scheduled to launch within the next couple of years, namely the Cadillac CTS Coupe, Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Cruze, Saab 9-5, and Saab 9-4X.
The Cruze was set to replace the Chevrolet Cobalt and delaying it now puts GM behind the small car trend. The Cruze is a very important car for the General, but GM is determined to have the Cruze released in the U.S. by 2010. The CTS Coupe and LaCrosse aren't expected to be high-volume cars anyway, so delaying these models shouldn't hurt too much. As for the Saabs, the 9-5 is an old car riding on an old platform and is in desperate need of a refresh, while the 9-4X is still in development at this time.
In the meantime, GM is expanding its development in other areas -- namely plug-in hybrids. The Chevrolet Volt is currently in the works, but we're told that other plug-ins could be arriving within the next few years.

Benedict Radcliffe meshes up a Toyota Corolla
Over the past 40 years, one Toyota Corolla car has been sold on average every 40 seconds, which makes this automobile one of the most liked by people all over the planet. Customizations, usually, at least for the Corolla are spoilers, leather interiors in unorthodox colors, a couple stripes or occasionally even a more powerful motor. However, Benedict Radcliffe had other ideas.
He made use of the Corolla and produced a completely matchless bit of art. Utilizing its sillehoute as a guide, he constructed a skeleton out of flexible wire. Check it out.

NEW AND FUTURE CARS: 2011 Ford Kuga - The Cars We Need Now!
Launched this past June, the Kuga is a compact, five-seat crossover designed by Englishman Martin Smith, who left General Motors to join Ford in early 2004. He and his team created an aerodynamic yet extroverted skin, which is accentuated by available wheels as large as nineteen inches. Stylish and fashionable, the new crossover from Ford of Europe is about the same length as a Ford Escape, but it sits astride a 2.8-inch-longer wheelbase.
The long stretch between the axles helps provide a commendably roomy cabin, although the stubby rear end encloses a rather small cargo hold (maximum capacity is 47.9 cubic feet). For passengers, there's plenty of cabin space, first-rate ergonomics, and premium-feeling materials. The rather uncomfortable and unsupportive seats are the only letdown. Ford offers a host of deluxe extras, including a large glass sunroof, keyless ignition, a heated windshield, dual-zone air-conditioning, and a backup camera.
The Kuga buyer's most significant option, though, is all-wheel drive. Ford chose a progressively variable AWD system that employs a Haldex clutch to distribute the forces between the axles. A brake-operated virtual limited-slip differential optimizes the side-to-side torque flow.
Like many European Fords, the Kuga uses the highly efficient modular C matrix-the basis of the Mazda 3, the Volvo S40, and other North American products. It's a solid, driver-oriented platform that blends inspiring handling with good ride comfort. The car-based Kuga is free of fun-killers like excessive body roll, sloppy steering, spongy brakes, and terminal understeer. Instead, it invites you to explore its strengths, such as sure-footed roadholding, energetic grip, and excellent all-wheel-drive traction, which makes all the difference on slippery blacktop and through tight corners. At more than 3500 pounds in AWD guise, the Kuga is no featherweight, but it nonetheless covers ground with enthusiasm and effortlessness. Just about the only serious dynamic drawback is the excessive vertical body movement on uneven freeway sections, which can threaten the otherwise impeccable high-speed directional stability.
In Europe, Ford offers only one engine in the Kuga, a 136-hp, 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder that pumps out 236 lb-ft of torque. The diesel is incredibly frugal, achieving 37 mpg in the European test cycle in both front- and all-wheel-drive models, giving the Kuga a range of some 550 miles. Its acceleration, however, is not exactly rocketlike (0 to 62 mph in 10.7 seconds), and it runs out of steam at 113 mph. The Kuga comes equipped exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission-no automatic is available. However, a second engine choice-a 2.5-liter, 200-hp, gasoline-burning five-cylinder-due later this year, will offer both manual and automatic transmissions. When the U.S. model goes into production, Ford likely will add a 145-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder, also gasoline-powered. A mild hybrid may follow suit, but Ford is still mum on the timing. Another possibility is a stretched seven-seat Kuga that would feature an extended wheelbase and a longer rear overhang.
Why we want it:
One word: style.
Why We Need It:
It may seem to be the odd man out in Ford's lineup, but the Kuga holds appeal for the fashion conscious.

SUVs and trucks: at the teats of the tanker
Pretty funny visual on this one. With raising gas prices (oh wait…), with people more concerned about the effects they have on their surroundings, it's becoming cool to own a small economy car. The Fit has done a pretty good job carving into this niche and owning the fun/responsible category (all thought it could be argued that Mini started this trend). Anyways, cool visual. The ad was done by RPA in California for Honda.

A New Deal for Green Cars
fter accepting the position of White House chief of staff under Barack Obama, Rep. Rahm Emanuel said, "You don't ever want a crisis to go to waste. It's an opportunity to do important things that you would otherwise avoid." Emanuel was speaking broadly about the economic crisis, but his statement holds even truer for the crisis facing Detroit automakers."It is our hope that [government] actions will restore the pre-eminence of our domestic manufacturing industry so it can emerge as a global, competitive leader in fuel efficiency and in new and path-breaking energy-efficient technologies that protect our environment."
Democratic Leaders
Letter to Treasury Secretary Henry PaulsonRising gas prices earlier this year took a toll on sales of the SUVs and large trucks produced disproportionally by General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. When the credit crunch hit, many remaining buyers became unable to secure auto loans. Sales plummeted, and the Big Three have been hemorrhaging money. General Motors could run out of cash by mid-2009.
When car companies were profitable, they put up every resistance to government intervention—such as standards for higher fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and advanced zero-pollution technologies. Now, they are in deep trouble and have come running to Washington for emergency assistance. And it appears they will get it.
In a letter to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Democratic leaders said yesterday "a healthy automobile manufacturing sector is essential to the restoration of financial market stability and the overall health of our economy." The Democrats urged the Bush administration to use a portion of the $700 billion bailout for the financial industry to rescue American automakers.
The potential Detroit bailout is a once-in-a-lifetime crisis turned opportunity. A grand bargain is in the works: the federal government provides billions of dollars to the automakers, and in exchange, the automakers must retool to produce high-mpg gasoline cars, gas-electric vehicles, clean diesel cars, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric cars.
The Democrats spelled out the deal in their letter: "It is our hope that [government] actions will restore the pre-eminence of our domestic manufacturing industry so it can emerge as a global, competitive leader in fuel efficiency and in new and path-breaking energy-efficient technologies that protect our environment."Obama's Climate Czar, And Hybrid Cheerleader
The new deal for green cars will probably have to wait until after Obama is inaugurated. (Bush has been cool to the idea of a bailout for carmakers.) The responsibility for striking the right deal with carmakers could fall to Obama's "climate czar," a new cabinet position that environmentalists hope will be created in the new administration. The definition of this position has not yet been established, but in broad terms, the individual would facilitate initiatives between the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, and the Interior Department.
"We should help America's automobile industry to convert quickly to plug-in hybrids that can run on renewable electricity."
Al Gore
"The Climate for Change," Nov. 9, New York TimesIn effect, this person would become the chief governmental strategist for reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases in the US.
Several names have been circulating throughout the media and blogosphere. The short list includes New Mexico governor and former energy secretary, Bill Richardson, and the former head of California's EPA, Terry Tamminen. But the leading candidate is Al Gore, former vice president and Nobel Prize winner.
Gore was practically filling out his application for the position with his opinion pieces this week in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. He outlined a five-point plan for massive carbon reductions, which included helping,
"America's automobile industry (not only the Big Three but the innovative new startup companies as well) to convert quickly to plug-in hybrids that can run on renewable electricity."
Gore also called for a nationwide fleet of plug-in hybrids to help solve the problem of electricity storage. He wrote, "Cars could be charged during off-peak energy-use hours; during peak hours, when fewer cars are on the road, they could contribute their electricity back into the national grid."
Despite a limited choice of gas-electric cars and negligible support from government in the past eight years, more than 1 million consumers purchased a hybrid car. This is a precursor to the next eight years when hybrids could receive the full support of government funding, the leadership of a Nobel-winning cabinet member, the eagerness of consumers craving alternatives, and the compliance of an auto industry made to be accountable. The green car revolution is about to shift into overdrive.

Crazy crash
A car, an Audi, was cut in two as the result of a horiffic traffic accident on Friday evening.
The accident happened on the road between Goesdorf and Dahl, shortly after 17:00, when its driver lost control and collided with a roadside tree. The impact broke the car in two.
Amazingly, the driver survived the crash and was found in the wreckage when the emergency services arrived on the scene. It is understood that he walked away from the accident with the aid of ambulance staff. He was later brought to hospital in Wiltz.
The police believe that excessive speed was a contributory factor in the accident.
Crazy thing about this is that the driver walked out of the car almost with no injuries and phoned the emergency services himself

World's fastest electric dragster
This dragster at the time was the fastest of its kind in the world. By "its kind" I mean that this is an all-electric dragster. Watch as it rockets down the quarter-mile with only the sound of rubber gripping road, but make sure your speakers are turned up.

Giant cargo ships are going green with solar sails
Some of the stuff we buy from China is so cheap, that I wonder how they manage to cover even the shipping costs for the selling price. Now China's biggest shipping company COSCO is giving us a clue. They just signed a deal with Solar Sailor of Australia, to fit some of their cargo ships with gigantic rigid sails, each the size of a 747 jet's wing. We've looked before at small scale versions of the same idea, but never anything this huge
Under ocean going conditions, the sails provide enough thrust to reduce fuel consumption by 20-40 percent, while the solar panels covering them deliver power to the crew quarters and navigation electronics. The ship's ballast is provided by rechargeable batteries, which can drive the boat electrically if needed, and if you have a really stiff wind, the screws can be reversed to further charge the batteries. The giant sails can also be folded flat onto the deck if there's a threatening storm.

VW's New Polo GTI unleashed
Hot hatch fans rejoice – the Golf GTI is getting a little brother!
VW has an all-new Polo on the way in 2009, and is readying the wildest, fastest and sportiest version ever to top the range.
Following in the footsteps of the MkV Golf GTI – which showed VW could still produce amazing performance cars when it launched in 2004 – the Polo GTI looks set to be a sales smash hit.
As you can see, the flagship won't be short of visual aggression. All the classic GTI design cues are there, from the piano black grille highlighted in red to the GTI badging and deep air intakes.
Neat touches include muscular flared arches, filled by gorgeous alloys. The look is finished off by a subtle roof spoiler and bodykit – and the result is by far the most
distinctive Polo ever made.
Inside, the cabin will see some dramatic leaps in quality, with similar soft-touch plastics to those in the latest MkVI Golf (tested on Page 40). But what will really make the newcomer stand out will be its detailing – which includes figure-hugging sports seats, red piping and racy aluminium pedals.
The next Polo will be similar in size to the outgoing machine. But as it shares the PQ25 small car platform that underpins the latest SEAT Ibiza, more space has been freed up inside. Using this chassis as a base, company engineers will also add stiffer springs and thicker anti-roll bars, plus sophisticated traction and stability control systems.
When it was launched, the MkV Golf GTI set the standard for modern performance VWs, and the Polo GTI aims to have a similar impact. It will combine accurate steering and limited body roll with a compliant ride. Completing the package is a set of upgraded brakes.
However, the Polo's hottest asset will be its engine: a 1.4-litre supercharged and
turbocharged four-cylinder TSI, which will grace the Ibiza Cupra early in 2009.
This produces 178bhp and 250Nm of torque in the GTI, and gives a 0-60mph time of around seven seconds and a 140mph top speed.
What will make the car fun to drive will be the way its power is delivered. The combination of turbo and supercharging means there will be a broad spread of torque at low revs, with muscular urge continuing all the way to the red line. The engine's small capacity will also translate into strong economy and CO2 emissions. Figures of 40mpg and less than 150g/km are expected.
As with the Cupra, the GTI gets a six-speed manual box as standard, with a fast-shifting seven-ratio DSG box an option.
While the new Polo is set to make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the GTI won't be seen until early 2010. A price of around £15,500 is likely.
